Company History
The Ideal Machinery and Supply Co. at 109 East Main
Street, Plainville, was originally founded as the Ideal
Switch Co. in 1906 by Frederick O. Hoerle and his son
Rowland Evans Hoerle. They manufactured knife switches
and spark plugs for the early automotive industry. In
1919 when
the automobile industry moved to Detroit, the Hoerles
moved from their West Main Street address to the present
site at 109 East Main Street with the intention of
manufacturing screw machine parts. Before they were able
to get this new idea off the ground someone made them an
offer to buy the existing machines and the industrial
supply business was born.
In 1925, Frederick died leaving his son Rowland to run
the business. The depression of the 1930s had its effect
on Ideal as it did on almost everything. With the
scarcity of new and used machinery, the company directed
more of an effort towards the sale of industrial
supplies. During World War II and after, the company
concentrated strictly on new machinery and supplies.
Rowland's son Cadwell joined the firm in 1945, followed
by his brother, Fred, in 1950. With the death of Rowland
in 1954, Fred and Caddy continued to service the
Connecticut industries moving more towards the
industrial supplies and further away from the large
machines. During the following decades the brothers
continued to grow the business.
In the early part of the 1980s, two of Cadwell's sons,
Theo and Art, and a daughter, Signe Guzzo, joined the
firm and it has continued to be very much a family
business. In 1991 Fred passed away unexpectedly. With
Caddy enjoying his retirement, the fourth generation of
the Hoerle family continues to keep the Ideal Machinery
& Supply Co a leader in supplying Connecticut's
industrial needs.
One of the organizations that Ideal has been a part of over
the years is Rotary International. Caddy has been a member since
1948 and for his first fifty years had a perfect attendance
record. In January of 2008, Art joined his Dad as a fellow
Rotarian. The Plainville Rotary Club meets weekly. To find out
